I'm making some Final Fantasy Tactics sprites.
I'm making a large sprite from the game (an enemy sprite) and I thought I had every color I need. The sprite is like seriously 80% complete.

Then I got to the hair and it turns out I need another variation of gray.
Hama makes a shade of gray I need, it should be a little darker or lighter than Perler's. I need that extra variation for it to come out accurately.

I ordered the beads I need (and then some) tonight, but it's still gona be days before they get here.

Meantime I gotta break down the peg boards without f'ing up my work so far and put them somewhere it won't get messed up.

Really wish I could buy the hama beads domestically from the store :/
Oh well at least I got Zelda to keep me busy for the next few days.

If you do end up with a different shade, please post photos and descriptions of where to get them.

Gray is one of the major roadblocks with beads, IMO.

Finally.

The verdect: Hama gray is ever-so-slightly darker than perler gray. However, this difference is almost imperceptable. Someone who isn't a nitpicker probably wouldn't notice the difference at all.

It's enough to fill in the variation I need, but it is not as dark as I had hoped. Very very similar to perler.
They're similar enough so that, if you're more relaxed about colors or are on a budget, you probably don't need it.
I'm nit picky and I don't have a budget so I'm okay with it.

Budgets are evil. =(

You're right about the Hama/Perler difference, though- it's noticeable, but barely. Still, if you make something with a lot of different shades of gray right next to each other, could be useful.

The perils of shipping....

I ordered another load of beads from two eBay sellers- one package made it safely to the mailbox; the other was slightly larger and wouldn't have fit, so of COURSE the lazy-ass mail carrier just left it by the door and counted it "delivered," even though (according to the post office lady I spoke to) they're supposed to leave "attempted delivery" notes and hang onto stuff if it's too big to fit through a mail slot.

Problem: Shipping insurance would have cost as much as the beads themselves. I was out of town all weekend. I live in an apartment building. With, apparently, people who steal things.

What really ticks me off is that the beads for my project are likely either in a trash can somewhere after the waste of skin drug addict who stole them figured out there wasn't anything valuable in there (instead of, I dunno, RETURNING IT), or some working-class mother who just couldn't resist temptation decided to keep the free craft project for her underprivileged children, who will likely grow up to be uneducated and work as prostitutes or 40-year old fast food drones.

I hope karma bites them all with venom-filled cancer fangs. Now I have to order my beads again. When I can afford it. >.< Red Robot's never going to get finished at this rate. At least he hates people, too. http://dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1624

Yeah, I know, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and I probably shouldn't be ripping on poor people when I'm privileged enough to waste my time with plastic video game sprites, but ARGH FRUSTRATING.

So I re-ordered some of the beads that got stolen, from the same seller because she's got the best selection, doesn't gouge on shipping, and is reliable. Not as many as I'd ordered before, because I'm kind of poor at the moment. The seller (callahan13 on eBay) sent a note to let me know my package was shipped, 'cos she knew I was keeping track of that stuff this time.

I got my package today. It was big enough to fit in an actual box, rather than an envelope. This was something of a surprise. So I opened it, and was confounded by the sight of many bags of beads- everything I'd ordered, plus an extra invoice- all the stuff I'd ordered from her last time, with "Merry Christmas!" written at the bottom. She *re-sent* an entire order of beads to me. All of the Hama colors that are difficult to find elsewhere, too!

HOW COOL IS THAT!?

So...yeah. If you guys want to order stuff from eBay, check her store. It's like obligatory that I promote her shamelessly. And get the damn shipping insurance.

...also, please don't scam the lady by telling her your stuff got lost or something, when it really didn't. That would suck and I'd feel horrible for telling you what a nice thing she did.

I agree, as far as eBay stores go, callahan13 has about the best selection when it comes to Hama beads. For Perler beads however, proud2bparents has a much better selection. Between the two you can create a very good palette of colours.
