I'm surprised this is considered news.

http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?ei=UTF-8&p=Aqua+Dots Bunch of links about Aqua Dots
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071110/ap_on_re_af/china_toys_date_rape_drug;_ylt=AuM0iso6dv8rPiw2I1Qxeuys0NUE For example.

I didn't know this existed. "Aqua Dots" in the US, "Bindeez" abroad. Little plastic things you fuze together into a tangible form. That sounds familiar...
Except that the Chinese manufacturer substituted a nontoxic glue with a quite toxic chemical during production. It turns into GHB in your body. My unerstanding is, it isn't actually GHB but it turns into it once ingested.
What does this have to do with bead sprites.
Well it's basically the same principle - take a bunch of rainbow small objects and fuze them together into a recognizable form. The difference is that with Aqua Dots, you fuze them with water instead of a hot iron. Which actually does sound a little bit safer for the kiddies. It looked like these might be fuzable into a 3-d form too? I saw some pictures that looked like you could stack them in 3 dimensions instead of 2...

I'm kind of curious to get a pack now just for the novelty of it, but of course chances are they've all been pulled from store shelves and if I go in to a craft store, and ask, "Hey where can I get some of them Aqua Dotz?" The store clerk will think I have alterior motives. Kind of like when that "Hot Coffee" mod came out for GTA. THEN I wanted to buy it and couldn't :/

We're not eating any beads rite guys
Perler beads has a message on their website reminding everyone that they're made in the USA.
I know Hama beads are european but I don't know where they're manufactured. I'm not eating them though so I don't really care.

But you know... if you're doing this sort of thing with a little kid, I'd feel uncomfortable letting a little kid do this alone. There's a choking hazard if nothing else, and with our beads irons get hot. I burned a finger once.

Two days before I found out about this, I saw the aqua dots at wal-mart and considered getting them instead, course I finally decided they wouldn't be as good as the beads so I didn't... kinda eerie how close I came, huh? o_O

I was at the store a few weeks ago and actually carried a package of them around for a while before deciding that the $12.99 they were charging was too much.

I went back this weekend, figuring I'd give them a try, but no luck finding them anywhere. I guess this is why, as I had no idea they'd been recalled.

(interesting side-note: Oblivious to the impending shit-storm, I picked up GTA San Andreas one day before the whole 'Hot Coffee' debacle broke. The next day, GameStop had yanked them all. Too bad it's basically worthless now since no one cares anymore.)

I did buy these, and I am jealous that you guys never experienced these. They absolutely suck. I bought the small set, which came with a pen-like thing that dispenses the beads. You have to load the pen, which is a pain in the a$$. You have to reload it many times because it only holds 10 or 12 beads of one color at a time (it has 3 or 4 slots). If you don't use the pen or a pair of tweezers, then you're in trouble. The beads will push others out of place, and since they're round, they roll away quickly unless you're working on a perfectly straight surface. I had to spray a lot of water on it to get it to stick together, but it did. Here's a picture of what I made (the design was included):

I swear to God, this was the least amount of fun that I ever had doing a craft. They probably put the GHB in there to make it seem like it's good.

After I made the snail I threw the whole thing away. I'm glad that I didn't give it to my niece and nephew. I knew Aqua Dots were evil! Save yourselves!! Twisted Evil

My daughter had asked for 'Bindeez' for xmas, but I couldnt get them. That's how I ended up with Hama's.. (and subsequently addicted myself Razz )
Didnt realise they were pulled!

Somehow I'm kinda glad things have worked out that way!

Ironic how 'Bindeez' is how a Northern Ireland person would pronounce 'Bin These'.... Laughing
