Ahahaha. That's right. Another newbie.

And not just any newbie. I'm a complete one. Three things you should know:

1.) I have no idea what I'm doing.

Don't know where to get beads, how much they typically cost, who makes what colors, what a pegboard even is, if I'm going to let this control my life.

2.) I have little/no artistic ability.

Well, sure, I can pick things apart pixel by pixel (I have for other projects), but layers and creation of my own sprites is beyond me. I realize this isn't necessary anyway, but I figured I should mention it. My current plan is to start at some smaller NES sprites and work my way up from there.

3.) The most comprehensive image program I have is MS Paint.

Ahaha. Yeah. You won't catch me buying Photoshop any time soon, especially considering that I'm in college. If I had several other reasons to get Photoshop, maybe... but this is just a single hobby.

So, I think you've got your work cut out for you. Start from the very beginning, please (it's a very good place to start).

Snickersnack and welcome.

Right, for getting beads I'd check out callahan13's eBay Store, best deals out there I've found so far. When I started out I tested the water by getting a couple of bags of mixed beads and a couple of boards to make sure I actually enjoyed doing it, so I'd probably suggest doing the same before investing too much in the hobby.

As for image manipulation progs, GIMP is your friend. ;)

Eck. Should also be mentioned (for purchasing purposes) that I live in the USA. Not sure how much that'll affect shipping from callahan13.

EDIT: Ahaha. It affects shipping a lot. Either that, or the shipping is just generally outrageous. $40 for $15 in beads? Any other ideas?

Good show on the Lewis Carroll counter-reference.

So seriously (and I apologize for the double post). Where else can I, an American, order beads at a relatively cheap price? I think if I just get the materials, I can work out a few NES sprites and then up my ambition if I take a real liking to this.

That one seems nice and cheap, thanks!

Just thought of another thing or two: where can I find a list of color swatches for Perler and the other company (should I find a good site to get the other ones), and what will my ironing necessities be?

EDIT: Oh! And pegboards. That site doesn't seem to have good square pegboards. Where can I get some good ones of those?

EDIT 2: Ahaha. Missed them. Sorry about that.

Oops! Sorry about that.

My color swatch and ironing questions still remain, however.

Well callahan13 is in the US. I think the shipping prices may be displaying high because I linked to ebay.co.uk, 'cause that sounds like the shipping prices, ish, that I paid.

As for a list of colours, there are a few here on the board. Here's a recent one: http://beadsprites.informe.com/viewtopic.php?t=493

Ironing necessities... Standard clothing iron, and grease-proof baking paper should do the trick.

Alrighty! Thanks everyone. I'll look into the various product sources and start on a few things. Expect to see a creation thread eventually. Probably.

EDIT: Ehehe. I'm forgoing the NES sprites in favor of the Game Boy for some Pokemans. I'll surely revisit the NES, but Pokemon first.

If you're interested in starting right away, ie. not wanting to wait for beads to ship, you should be able to find a mix tub at Walmart, JoAnn's Crafts, or Michael's Crafts.

The large pegboards are kind of hard to find in stores, in my area at least, but I found a kit at JoAnn's that comes with a large pegboard, some mix beads, and google eyes. Weird, I know. I just tossed the eyes and used the pegboard.

Most bead kits come with ironing paper to start with, but most people have better luck with Parchment paper. I believe its the same stuff Kassidy recommended, just a different name. Make sure you don't use wax paper though. The wax melts and the paper will burn.

I live in a city, so it's much more convenient for me to order online than it is to hop on buses on a possible wild goose chase.

Thanks, though! Very Happy

Oh, I see. Yeah, it can be harder when you live in a big city. Im in a smallish town of about 64,000, so I usually have to drive to the next town over to find beads other then mix tubs.
