Re: CATS

I'll accept this mission. For great justice, of course.

Perler really needs to get on the ball and start making dark grey beads. I've had the pipe dream of making this screenshot for a while now. In the unlikely event that I could ever get this monstrosity made, I'll build a custom sandwich-type plexiglass frame for it.

It requires 57,334 beads and 72 interlocking pegboards. Should come out to be roughly 51" wide and 45" tall.

If I were to do this one, I'd mount the sprite on a black background and save myself two weeks of laying out mad amounts of black, haha.

Ditto this. Same for Valkyrie Profile. Also, more Guilty Gear DS or Wonderswan sprites.

It'd definitely save time and money that way; unfortunately, I think it would compromise the quality too much. One issue is that the arm segments don't make contact with each other, they're each "floating". The medals are far away from the rest of scene's figures. Also, when you have any areas that aren't filled in with beads, you get that annoying rounding-off and spreading out of the edge beads around the sprite's border.

Whereas every bead would stay compacted and would not spread out past it's place (except of course for the outermost rows of beads for the entire picture) if you have every bead surrounded on all sides. If you've ever had a one pixel-width gap in beads that ended up looking weird and way too small, because the two parallel rows of beads that bordered the gap spread out enough when ironed to fill much of the gap, you know what I'm talking about. With the serious amount of heavy ironing this scene would require, that would quickly become a problem. It'd be worth it to me to fill in the black sky area to prevent those "bead-gap enchroachment" and spreading issues. -Justin

I agree, Justin...
Skipping out all those black beads just sounds like laziness anyways...
(kidding, Doc Oc!!) ;)

Well, if you outlined all other colors with black at the edges, the black would blend in with the background. And if you still weren't satisfied, you could axe the black with an x-acto, leaving perfectly square edges. As for the floating arm parts, let em do just that - let em float. Same with the medals. And while you're at it, layer the pieces to give it depth...at least that's what I would do.

Take a look at my Mega Man X Sprite (especially the 'text' floating around him):

If that was one solid piece, not only would the inevitable glare wash out the details in the picture when you view it, but it would curl, deform and bend like a motherf-cker. If you didn't like the difference between the background and the black beads (as the beads appear darker) you could paint the background with a matte finish (unless of course you went with the outline and axe method i mentioned above).

Anyways, I was trying to save you hours of your life...and about fifty bucks worth of wasted beads.

No worries tho, knock yourself out with all that frustration, haha...I kid, I kid, but I still think I make a very valid point.

I totally respect your reasons for why you'd prefer to do it that way, but I'd just have to personally tackle it as one piece. It'd just be worth the extra money and bs&t to make it a complete pixel-for-pixel (or bead-for-pixel, to be more apt) reproduction.

Unfortunately, it's a moot point anyway, at least until dark grey perler beads come to fruition. Even then, I'm in no way confident in my ability to successfully complete something of this magnitude.

There will be silver from Hama soon! Let's hope that suffices!

Actually, right now, Hama makes translucent black, which actually serves nicely as a dark gray.
