Your best bet might be to hunt something down from the Pocket Fighter games.

The basic Street Fighter sprites are pretty large.

This reply is kinda late, but have considered the portrait from the select screen in street fighter 2? In SF2 Turbo, the mug is a bit better, and if you cut it down by one pixel, it fits on one pegboard. Otherwise, I'd suggest shrinking the image in photoshop using the 'nearest neighbor' option in image resize. Shrink it to 50 percent and clean it up a little, no problem. If you're real desperate, I could do it for you but at least give it a shot.
