I hadn't ever done cross-stitch before, so I figured I would try it out... two and a half years later, I'm about this far:
Close up:
Of course, the 2.5 years includes a 21-month hiatus. Still, I'm back on track and hope to finish before the end of 2008. It's mainly taking so long because I decided to do the black-on-black stitches -- see the Metroid square -- so it would keep its shape and have a more uniform pixel density.
For anyone that has done cross-stitch, it's on 18-count Aida, which I've heard is medium-to-high difficulty to work with.

Dude, you've gotta finish this. I've gotta see it complete. Fantastic job so far. _________________ Ark of The Covenant Creations: melting more than just Nazis! |

Well, I ended up finishing about a month later than I hoped, but it's done. I kept pretty close track of my time (based on the running time of whatever random DVD I'd throw in for background noise, or the handful of audio books I made it through). Overall, it took a little over 243 hours.
It's not framed yet. I'll post again after it is. I will also put a bead sprite next to it for size comparison... this thing is small!
Anyway, here it is:

As promised, here it is framed and with a sprite for size-comparison:
I told you it was small. |

So, this was my very first cross-stitch. If I could offer any single bit of advice, it would be to start with a project smaller than mine!
That said, I was amazed having done cross-stitch before trying Perler beads at how ridiculously fast (relatively speaking) I could churn out bead sprites. I can't imagine learning the difference in the opposite direction -- discovering how much slower cross-stitch is from beading -- and being able to keep my motivation up on anything larger than a test project.
Hehe, but don't let me be a wet blanket. If you do attempt it, I wish you luck (and may even be able to offer some pointers). |
