Hello everyone!!
My name's Kati, and I'm pretty new to making bead art. I recently came across someone's flickr account that was full of bead sprites, and immediately headed out to buy some mixed perler beads to try it out. I made a Boo for my boyfriend, Mog for myself (of course), and a black mage for a friend. I had to make them all in sections using the 14x14 peg square and ironing the different pieces together. =) It worked, but I know I need to invest in the boards that click together. So before I did that I just wanted to know if I should get the Perler boards or the Hama boards (or am I just being silly and they are the same thing?) From what I gather the Perler beads are the small ones, and the Hama beads are larger. What's the best to use?
Here's a picture of the Mog I made. I haven't seen this one done in the way I did it before, but then again I haven't looked everywhere on the internet. ;D
& here's the black mage I made for my friend. =) 4 pieces fused into one.
I also wanted to say that I think this forum group is AMAZING. I was looking through some of the members' art, and, not only is the work amazing, I think it's also really cool how no one seems to mind if people replicate each other's work as long as they don't claim the idea. Yay for all of you. <3 |

Hey Kati,
I'm not sure if there is necessarily a difference between the Perler boards and the Hama one, but the ones I've purchase with Perler beads seem to work better to me.
Another thing is, if you're in the US, Perler stuff is much easier to get, as many beaders from other countries have complained about having a hard time finding them in their particular location. But, you can get everything from Callahan13 on ebay, or by sending her a message on this forum (just browse the members until you find her, number 105 last I checked).
Also, Perler and Hama are basically the same size. Hama are slightly smaller, but they are interchangable. It should be noted, however, that Hama sells three sizes of beads, the most common of which are the same size as Perler Beads. Hama sells mini, midi and maxi. You want the midi beads, and most sellers like Callahan are selling Midi, since they are most common. |

Thank you =)
I will most certainly make a members' page when I make more. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving right now, so time is limited. Hopefully I'll be able to order the beads and boards I need soon and get things rolling. |

The circumference of Hama beads is slightly smaller than that of Perler beads. Hama's interlocking square pegboards are superior in my opinion, because they stay together. Perler's are O.K., however. Getting the large (29 pegs by 29 pegs) Hama boards in the U.S. is pretty darn difficult. I only have 4 and that's because they came in 2 Hama kits I purchased for my daughter. Hama beads do come in 3 sizes, as mentioned previously. The mini's are especially small and can be a challenge to work with, but very much worth the results. Perler beads come in two sizes, the "regular" midis and large (maxi) for the ankle biters/crumb snatchers to use.
Welcome to the forum! |

Oh my! Thank you very much. I wanted to pick a sprite different from those everyone else always makes. Plus it always made me laugh when he did this in the game, so it's pretty much my favorite of his sprites.
I recommend if you make it to do a clear row under the black shadow, too. After I took this picture I went back and added the row because it just looked off with the clear around all of the rest and not under the shadow.
Again, thanks for the welcome and the compliment. I like it here. |
