Alright, so I went to order Hama beads tonight, and much to my dismay, I find out that they don't ship to the US. So those of you not living in the UK, how do you get your Hama beads? More importantly, the mini ones as those are the ones I want.

Best bet is eBay.

Sellers romewith5 and callahan13 are good places to start.

The craft shop Hobby Lobby used to carry them, but they're mostly gone to Perler only.

I use both Perler and Hama beads in order to get the most diverse color palette possible.

Mini beads are manufactured only by Hama as far as I know.

I get my Hama mini beads (at relatively great expense, I might add, thanks to the low value of the dollar compared to the British pound AND the high cost of shipping and handling from Europe to the U.S.) from two sources:

Era Direct at Scottish Fibres: www.neweradirect.co.uk

and

Craft Wise Ltd.: www.craftwiseuk.com

Does anyone know of any other [less expensive] sources for Hama mini beads for those of us living in the U.S.?

On the flip side, I've only gotten Hama midi beads ["regular" size] from two ebay sources:
callahan13 and Turtle Crossing (romewith5).

Does anyone know of any other sources for Hama "regular" size beads for U.S. residents?

Thanks in advance,
Rose

There is a Perler distributor called KoolStuff4Kids.com, where I used to get my Perler beads but there are two disadvantages there. First, you can only get Perler, since they're American, and second, they cost way more than Ebay sellers. A bag of 1000 goes for around $1.75 on Callahan13's store and $1.99 on TurtleCrossing, but on KS4K they go for $2.79. Basically, everything is cheaper with Ebay sellers and they have good mixes of colors. I don't think there is any better place to get beads than them and as for minis, I have never been able to find them for a decent price.

I am in the process of making a thorough comparison between the colors of both Hama and Perler beads in order to expand my color palette as much as possible. As I live in the U.S., I had to order a 3000-bead mixed color tub of Hama beads from Australia (which was pretty spendy) in order to get an accurate representation of all the Hama colors for comparison. Unfortunately, this tub did not contain the new Hama color "Teddybear Brown" (a.k.a. Winnie-the-Pooh Yellow.)

I've noticed a subtle but definite difference in color between Hama Purple and Perler Purple. On the other hand, when I compare Perler Pastel Lavender to Hama Pastel Mauve (a.k.a. Pastel Purple, the "older" name) sometimes I think I notice a difference, but then the next minute I'm not so sure. When I place a bunch of these Hamas next to a bunch of these Perlers, there seems to be a difference, but when I mix a small handful of each together, I'm finding it all but impossible to separate the two. What has your experience been?

Also, I'm wondering about color variations when it comes to viewing the beads hole-up, the way they will all eventually be viewed when in completed pieces. For example, the new Hama metallics look metallic when lying on their sides, but they do not at all "read" as metallic in finished pieces. Hama Silver "reads" as a dark grey in completed pieces, and Hama Bronze becomes another shade of brown. (Believe me, I'm not complaining about this, as I really needed another shade of grey and one more brown doesn't hurt, either!)

I'd really like to get everyone's opinion about this issue, i.e. what color variations do you note between certain Hama beads and their Perler "counterparts"? Which color variations do you think are significant enough to make a difference in completed pieces?

Thanks in advance,
Rose

I personally prefer to leave metalic and clear out of my sprites if possible. For multiple shades of grey I substitute other colors.

This is an example of a range of colors where shades of grey would be preferred but not a possibility:

White
Toothpaste
Grey
Periwinkle Blue
Black

If the portion of the sprite has bluer tones, like hair or a tunic with blue patterns on it, I use the above combination. For example, look at my custom Soul Calibur 2 bead sprites. Sophitia and Cassandra are good examples of using this color scheme. You can use other blues in there as well if need be.

White
Creme
Tan

Grey
Brown
Black

This color scheme works nicely for a weathered piece of 'white' clothing. A good example of this is my Ice Climbers bead sprites.

Otherwise, you'll be forced to use an unpredictable shade of silver, bronze, gold, etc. I made a mini Gamecube with Perler's Silver to see if I could achieve the Platinum look and it came out alright but it's too varied in shade on each bead. Like you said, good on the sides but darker on the edges. And that gets worse when you iron it.

I pretty much got a full bag of every color from both Perler and Hama once I got really into bead sprites. This way you can put em all in containers, mark them so you know which are which and worst come to worst there will be one or two colors you use a little of.

Trust me, if you're thinking about having the fullest palette possible, chances are you'll use these beads up.

Yes, I can ship to UK. It will cost you a bit more, but I can do it. Just let me know what you would like to purchase and I can give you a shipping quote.
Thanks

What about the mini hama beads and not the midi ones? I didn't see any of those in your shop last time I looked.

No, I am sorry. I do not carry the mini beads. Have you checked Turtle Crossing's store on Ebay.

Do you by any chance have a link to his store? I looked on ebay for mini hama beads and was unable to find any.

So not about the mini beads...but I just thought I'd point this out.

I normally don't advertise and whatnot, but I saw callahan13's message on my phone at work today. So, seeing as I have NO Hama beads and wanted to expand my collection, I shot her an email. Long story short, I'm getting 1000 beads of 91 different colors for $125. That's NINETY-ONE different colors, all labeled, Hama and Perler, for $125 shipped. Smile

I'm REALLY stoked right now. There will most definitely be pictures of this AMAZING order when it comes in. And for serious - callahan13...You rock. I know where I'll be buying my beads from now on. Very Happy
