Since perler & hama beads only come in so many colors, you are quite limited in the choice of colors available when making any bead-thing.

Video game sprites also come in only so many colors - but not really. One sprite might be made up of as few as 2 or 3 colors if it's 8-bit, but the 16-bit ones can get a lot more complicated palettes.

So when you're making a bead sprite, do you try to follow the sprite's colors as accurately as possible, or do you take artistic liscence & choose "Off" colors to make it feel more correct?
In the end the stylistic choices may make the colors incorrect b ut at first glance you wouldn't even notice. "That is such-and-such character, spot on. Oh wait it's not spot on? Hm it looks okay to me."

I've gone both ways, but I try to be as accurate as possible.

I think Butz from FFV will do a good job illustrating the problem.

The original sprite is included here. The sun washed out the colors but I tried 4 variations trying to get it just right. (I won't be doing that again...) "Cream" beads for the face were too pasty, "Peach/Flesh" seemed too pale. "Tan" and "Butterscotch" looks the most correct, which is weird since butterscotch is a shade of orange!
But the blue shirt was tricky too, since it's shades of blue I don't really have. I tried different hair colors too since he's got some shades of brown that don't exist in perler or hama beads.

What's funny though is that,

Taken alone, without comparing one to another,
Any one of these sprites would still pass as Butz. If I didn't have all 4 lined up like that, you could still look at one and recognize it within reason.
In person, the bottom right sprite looks most correct, but from the photo, due to the lighting conditions, the one on the bottom left does!

Tiamat would have done just as well; I chose the more "Sea-Green" green instead of "Pastel Green," even though pastel green is actually more accurate.
Tiamat just always felt sea-green to me. It didn't look right in pastel green to me.

For one thing, my computer monitor is a flat-screen LCD. I find that it tends to make colors more washed out compared to CRT & newer monitors.

So what problems do you face when picking colors from a limited selection and how do you deal with it?

It's best to go for a feeling rather than accuracy, that's what makes this artistic Very Happy

I'm personally a bit more for accuracy, and only research and create sprites I have the colors for, or at least a good match.

I made a Sora sprite from Kingdom Hearts on GBA, and it turned out poorly due to color issues.

I just try to copy the sprite the best way I can. I know that they may not be perfect, but wtf does it matter? :/

I'm a little bit both, leaning more towards accuracy... but it depends on the situation...

If I'm doing a piece that has three shades of brown, and I have three, I'll use the three I have... if it's a more orange brown I'll use a rust (perler), or reddish brown (hama), if I have choices, I'll make the "best"choice... but if it's with black and grey, I'll use what I got, cause I don't have any other choices... yet...

but I agree with Pinkdramon, if you make a sprite and use "off" colors, no one is going to know unless someone else goes and compares yours with the actual sprite, like when they are making it aswell... Like Pinkdramon did with my Bartz... I still stand by my peach/flesh face combo...
