so the wife and i were shopping at ikea, and as we are walking through the kids section.
i happen to notice they sell beads there. $5 canadian dollars for approx 5000-8000 (no actuall count on the container).
i thought wow. they have have two mixes. a regular color mix, yellow blue red green. all your basic common colors, nothing fancy.
the other mix is a transparent mix. same idea as the first bucket. then they also have boards as well.
intersting about them though. they have square boards, but they dont connect.
they do sell a pack of two boards that connect for $2 canadian dollars. interesting thing about them is they are rectangle, not square.
o well they work. havent used the beads or even gotten a chance to compare they colors to "perler" beads or even try to make a
sprite out of em. but i will deffinetly let everyone know.

So i am back for the review on the "IKEA" beads.

the colors are VERY close. the perler beads have a flat or "matte" finish. the ikea beads have a gloss finish to them.
the ikea boards are perfect the dimensions are 28 pegs x 42 pegs

now for the kicker

the ikea beads are a slight bit smaller than perler beads. height wise and width wise.
i dont think they will iron together with perler beads but i am going to deffinetely going to attempt it.
until then they are being kept separate.
perler beads while on the board touch each other.
the ikea beads dont. which i assume would make for more ironing and possibly very thin sprites
i am going to attempt a basic 1up mushroom using only the ikea beads, to compare to my already
made perler bead one i have and i will post results and pictures when i am done.

once again back with some results
the 1up mushroom i made with the "IKEA" beads the other red mushroom
i made a while back with perler beads

i changed it up a little bit. for the 1up mushroom i tried something i wanted to do a while ago but never
had the boards for it. instead of using 1 bead per pixel i made it 4 beads per pixel. which still has
the same effect but bigger. it turned out pretty good i think.

now as for the overall quality of these beads. pretty good. i did notice a couple things though.
i noticed a little extra curl than normal. nothing some quick re-iron and something heavy on it the
prevent the curl and that problem was fixed

ps sorry for my ugly mug, had to use the laptop webcam.

the second is, the "IKEA" beads due to their shorter height i noticed they get pretty thin once ironed.
nothing extreme or anything. just not as thick.

and lastly due to there width not as big i felt i needed to iron a little more as well, due to some minor spacing problems
they dont sit as evenly and perfect as perler beads do on a board. but once again nothing that a little extra ironing cant fix.

overall id say they were a good buy. due to there size, they wont meld well with perler or hama beads but
i can bang off some stuff with just these.

Hey Dick,

where do you buy the majority of your beads from? Being from canada I am having a hard time finding an affordable source!

i bought a large 11,000 bead bucket at walmart for 20 bux. now the crappy part is sorting them.
buying online is the most ideal because you can buy 1000 count bags of individual colors.
i havent yet bought online, but i think its for sure the way to go. but if your wanting to start now
pick up a bucket or 2 from walmart. o yeah also check toysrus and micheals.
ikea has em as well, but as you read from this post becarful with them. but i highly recommend
buying the boards at ikea, you get 2 rectangle ones for 2 bux. cant go wrong with that.
my problem when i started was finding the connectable boards, other than online.

$20 for a bucket of 11k? The buckets at our Walmart aren't nearly that expensive- something in the $11-12 range, I believe. Also, I totally managed to find a bucket of 22k for $18 online, which was an awesome deal even with scary shipping (the seller managed to fit a bunch of other stuff in the box as well).

The point of all this? Definitely start buying online.
