I've been making bead-sprites for about a month now, but only now decided to upload them. My inspirations for bead-sprites started by seeing one of Luna from Lunar by ~meddygarnet on DeviantArt.com. I then started looking at works from DrOctoroc and Zaghrenaut and I knew I had to start creating Very Happy Below are my works in the order that they were made.

Luna Singing

DragonMaster Alex

Super Sonic

Pikachu

Hitman Reborn-Hayato Gokudera

Hitman Reborn-Kyoya Hibari

Hitman Reborn-Adult Lambo

Final Fantasy III

Random 8Bit Ones

Hitman Reborn-Bianchi

Hitman Reborn-Takeshi Yamamoto

Kingdom Hearts-Cloud

Bleach-Bankai Ichigo w/ Mask

Great start! I'm honored to be some what of an inspiration. I love watching more and more people get into bead sprites, it's just such a fun, addicting hobby.

I always love seeing Final Fantasy. Your work is very neat as well, which a lot of people don't take the time to produce clean work, so I'll definitely be watching you to see what you do next...

Thanks for all the replys. Attached is the Kazama Jin I finished yesterday. Jin is from the Tekken series, but the sprite is taken from NamcoxCapcom. It took about 4 hours to complete. I love the way the larger projects look, but I have such a hard time ironing them.

Thanks bud. Kazama Jin looks great! I did a series of custom Teken related sprited, just the girls from 5 and a few from Dark Resurrection and 6. They're a lot of fun.

There are also all the Soul Calibur 2 girls and the main girls from Final Fantasy X2.

DoctorOctoroc, it's just amazing ¡¡¡

How you transform a single image in something perler'ish ??

I fought against the photoshop and there wasn't any way i could transform a single image in something acceptable, and there it's a 3D render thath i REALLY want to do...

I beg for your knowledge ¡¡
Wink

And that Jin rocks ¡¡¡

I would like to put together a complete Bead Sprite guide of sorts, but I just can't bring myself to sit down and do it. I'm working on my blog and social media stuff right now, which is actually causing me to put off my job most days. For now, I'll give you the quick run down of how I go from a 3-D rendered image to a bead-spritable image:

1) Find your image, and shrink it down to the size you want to bead. Create a checkerboard grid with 29x29 squares as a reference - I use light green and greenish yellow for the alternating colors, and I have this as a background layer in Photoshop, and the layer above that (we'll call it "image") contains that resized image.

2) On a new layer ("sprite"), trace the character with a black outline, and trace all their clothing and stuff as well. For example, the edge of a shirt would get this outline, as well as their hair, any weapons they hold, etc. Basically, anything that would receive a line in a cartoon/comic drawing.

3) Using the "image" layer as a reference for shading, start with the lightest shade of the color within each "shape" created by your black outlines. Color as much of this inner area as accurately resembles the shade you are working with, then move on to the next one. Keep in mind how many shades you have available for that color, and distribute the various shades throughout the shape, so there won't be too much of the darker shade or too much lighter one. Repeat this process for all areas within the black outlines. I find turning the "image" layer on and off in between shading is usefull, for revealing pixels you may have missed. Also, zooming in and out once in awhile to see the sprite's progress helps too. Sometimes this means the difference in color of a single pixel for me.

4) Hide the "image" layer and you should have a well shaded sprite with a crude black outline - it's time to fix that. Basically, the principle here is re-coloring the black outline with like-colors inside the shapes. For outlines that rest between two areas, go with the color within the area that would be in the foreground. For example, an arm in front of the body, would use the color of the arm, as it overlaps the body behind it. The recoloring of the outline depends on the colors within the area it outlines, and the colors used to replace the black outline will be darker shades of the area within. If the area contains the darkest shade of its color, go with black. If it's medium shades of that color, use the darkest shade. If it's the lightest shades, go with medium for the outline. And so on.

So the outline for each "area" will not be a solid color around, you need to change it up based on the colors it borders.

Does this make sense? I will eventually get around to creating a guide for this, but for now, I hope this gives you some direction. As always, start with something small and simple to get the basics, and create your own style.

WOW, that's really detailed and helpful. Thank you for that information. I'm working on a number of commissions for a friend right now, but I am definitely going to try to do this. I would love to make Garnet from FFIX in the white mage outfit she has in the beginning. I will probably be sending lots of questions your way when I start this Smile Thank you again for all the help.

I must admit I hadn't played it until it came out on Gameboy Advance I think in 2001. So I'm not one of the original fans Smile

woot woot for a double post on my own topic. Here are some commissions I've been working on. Nothing elaborate, but the commissions come from the same person that asked for the Jin and now he's asking for Heihachi so I know what I'm working on this weekend Smile So without further ado....

From Left to Right:
Link, Nemo, Protoman & Iceman

I've seen your Renji. I really like that one. I'm still looking at doing a Bankai Hitsugaya, but I just haven't brought myself to do it yet. I have a huge list of things I want to do, I just haven't made much of a dent on it yet... Crying or Very sad

Yes, that's what I meant...I got confused, cause 8-Bit Artist did a painting of Little Nikki as well as Little Nemo - my bro got the Little Nikki one.

Anyways, I love the LITTLE NEMO bead sprite - the music from that game was hott (yes, two 't's).
